The Best Way to Upgrade Wordpress
March 6th, 2007 by Andrew Chen
I have upgraded workpress to 2.12 recently and installed several plugins. You can now rate a post and see how many times
They all together took a good trunk of time out of my weekend. Upgrading wordpress is kind of troublesome for me since I customized some of the admin pages and every time when I upgrade workpress my customization is over written and I have to redo the customization. I figure workpress upgrading is going to be frequent so I have decided to discard my customization on the admin pages. To facilitate the easy of workpress upgrading all the customization should be done in two places, the plugins folder and the theme folder.
I found the way that wordpress recommended to upgrade is probably not the best. I upgrade wordpress this way. First, create a new database and copy the existing database over to the new database. That serves as backing up the database. Second, deactivate all plugins and move all your existing wordpress files into a subfolder, for example, create a folder call backup207 under your wordpress directory and move all your existing wordpress files down one level into this folder. Third, copy the new version wordpress files to your wordpress directory and run upgrade script in browser if there is one. Four, copy your original plugins folder, theme folder and upload folder from your backup folder and paste them to the location where they belong in your workpress directory. Fifth, reactivate all plugins. Most likely you will be fine following these steps. One problem is some plugin writer didn’t design their plugins in a way that all plugin files are located in the plugins folder. I suggest you do not use those plugins. The files of a well designed plugin should always locate in the plugins folder. It is a good practice to keep all extension to wordpress into one place.

Thanks for the clear and precise information.
