I help a friend to re-install Windows XP. When I tried to open up task manager after re-installation completed I could not
find task manager in the pop up menu. Usually when you right click on the toolbar at the bottom of your screen you will see a pop up menu and task manager is usually a menu item. But I couldn’t find it. I thought maybe I can find the executable file of task manager and run it directly. Usually the windows executables are located in the c:\windows\system32\ directory. I look into that directory and found taskmgr.exe. That must be it. However when I ran it a popup box with a red X said, “Task Manager Has Been Disabled by your Administrator”.
I did some search and found an easy way to fix the “Task Manager Has Been Disabled by your Administrator” error. All you have to do is to fire up regedit.exe, go to the key HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows\ CurrentVersion\ Policies\ System and delete the value “DisableTaskMgr”. After that you can run taskmgr.exe again. And after you run it the pop up menu will have task manager again. Some point out that this behavior may be caused by malware and I believe that is possible because nowadays malware will do all kinds of things.
