At 11:25 am today which is about 8 hours from now I will get on an airplane to Hong Kong. After I reach Hong Kong I will take a ferry to Zhu Hai, the place I called home. It is the place where I was born and live for 25 years. It must be changed a lot. Eleven years seems a very long time but when I think about the day I told my best friends whom I grew up with that I was going to America. It is as if it happened a few weeks ago. Time really flies.

The first time I got the idea of coming to U.S. was in University. You may laugh at me if I tell you

that I wanted to come to the U.S just because I was curious about this piece of land. I saw on news and movies from time to time people risked their assets and even their lives just for an opportunity to come here. I remember I studied English really hard. I remember I waited the whole morning in line to register for TOEFL. I remember I ride on bicycle for 50 minutes in order to get to the testing center and it was raining. I remember I was enrolled in California State University, Fullerton, Master of Electrical Engineering.

I remember I was rejected the first minute when I was applying for a student VISA in U.S consulate in Guang Zhou in 1992. The reason was immigration tendency I didn’t show enough proof that I would come back to China. I was disappointed in fact I was mad. I was mad because the decision the consular made was totally careless. I was mad because my life was so easily twisted by somebody that knows nothing about me. I kept trying, five times totally, over the next two and half years and finally I got it. I would have try 100 times more but they only allow me to apply at least 6 months later after you failed.

Frankly the first time when I applied for student VISA I never think of living in America and not returning to China. But the more I got rejected the stronger my eager to come to and live in America. I didn’t care what subject I would be studying in my later application. I just wanted to get enrolled in a school so that I can have the I-20 and then apply for a student VISA. And so I was enrolled in the MBA program in USIU and I got my degree. Thinking back if my student VISA was approved the first time I applied for it I would probably have a totally different life. I think I would be at least two and half years ahead of what I am currently and I probably didn’t have to leave home for so long.

US is great country and Southern California is a very nice place to live. I think it worth to be here in the US for the past 11 years. China is catching up at a very fast pace and there are many places in China I haven’t been too. I always think whether I made the right choice to come to the US 11 years ago but looking back 11 years is quite short and I feel I still have time to make the choice again.
