I was surprised when I lean that MySQL was acquired by Sun Micro System. The price tag for the deal was 1 Billion. The industry was expecting MySQL going public and a hot IPO in 2008.

It is certainly a surprise for everyone knows MySQL. But it seems

to make a lot of sense for Sun to acquire MySQL. Sun is a pro open source company. The computer language it invented, Java, is used by most open source projects. Java itself is going open source. Sun has the open source development tool, Net Bean. It also has open source operating system OpenSolaris. So it makes sense to acquire an open source database.

I remember when Microsoft developed its NT operation system the only application it developed for NT was MS SQL server. It teamed up with Sybase to port Sybase on to NT. I guess the combination of database server and operation system can really make the operating system gain market recognition

We all want to see how MySQL evolve under the “Sun”
