This is obviously my random thought. When IE7 is released, one of its advance features is to support top level Chinese domain name, like 北京.CN. The Chinese word in this domain name means Peijing, the capital of China. You should know that ??.CN and Peijing.CN are two different domain names but 北京.CN and 北京.中国 is the same domain. So a thought came to my mind if I register some popular Chinese word as domain name will that bring me fortune some day? I knew that, Local.com Corporation (used to be interchange Corp.), the company I am working for, acquired the local.com domain for $700,000.

Chinese population is account

for one fifth of the total world population. The majority of the people in China still don’t have internet access but the growth of internet access in China is phenomenous. That is to say, the room for the growth of internet services targeting Chinese web surfers is going to be huge and the demand for an easy-to-remember Chinese domain name will increase a lot in the coming years. With that thought I registered a few top level Chinese domains. I will tell you what they are later. In fact I found I was late on this already. A lot of popular names in one or two Chinese characters were already registered. All the domain names I registered were with four Chinese characters.

Registering Chinese domain name is not as easy as you think. I had to ask my brother who was in China to wire 2000 RMB to the registrar’s bank account. They don’t have online credit card payment. I actually didn’t find any Chinese business take online credit card payment, the industry certainly lack of advance payment method. Anyway the transfer took almost 5 days to arrive. When I called customer service to ask whether my money arrived, they told me they didn’t know because they had a person, first thing in the morning, to go the bank to check the accounts so that they could have the sender’s information of money transfers. The person already came back for the day and I had to wait till the next day to find out. I felt that was something laughable. It didn’t advance a bit after 10 years.

Well the domain names are not cheap. They cost me 280 RMB each, about $35 for a year. One of the domain name I like the most is 单身club.CN. It combines a Chinese word and an English word. It means SinglesClub.CN but again SinglesClub.CN is a totally different domain name. I like to register this name because I wanted to set up a dating site just like, plentyoffish.com. If you don’t know, it is the biggest site managed by one person, the owner himself, and it brings him thousands of dollars advertising income every day. I really can dream, am I? :)

I also registered 本地信息.CN means LocalNews.CN, 公司指南.CN means CorporateDirectory.CN. When I check how much the name local.com worth on leapfish, it says it is worth 11 million. Pretty good isn’t it? I am not hopping for that but just like to see what is going to happen with IE7 supporting Chinese Domain names. If Kevin Trudeau knows about this he would probably exaggerate the fact a lot and put a lot of Chinese domain names for sell, Will he?
