CommVault Galaxy QiNetix is an advance backup and recovery tool. It is provided by a company called CommVault Systems (NasdaqGS:CVLT) .

I am no expert of the tool but I have good experience of using it to restore database. However it is a norm that there is software bugs wherever there are software. CommVault tools are no exception no matter how great they are.

In a case I experienced, a disk failure wipe out SQL server, all the system databases and the operation system. So the database server had to be built from scratch, OS and SQL server had to be reinstalled and all systems databases had to be restored from backup which was done by CommVault Galaxy. In order to do that QiNetix client agent had to be reinstalled also. When CommVault restored the databases it was going very smooth. It took less than a few seconds and then said database restore was 100% percent completed. However, when I checked on the databases I found they appeared to be the same as they were. Nothing was restored. Try restoring different copies of backups taken at different time had no luck.

The system databases are important. The master database stores all the logins, backup devices, replication settings and linkservers. The msdb database stores all the DTS packages and jobs. In a nontrivial system, DTS packages and jobs may assume critical database task. When I saw CommVault didn’t restore the database the only thing in my mind was how to recover the DTS and Jobs quickly and what were the other choices if that could not be done. Fortunately I didn’t have to find the answer. It turned out that it was a know issue of CommVault and upgrading QiNetix client agent will clear that problem. That bug certainly killed a lot of my brain cells.

Having a great tool to work with doesn’t mean that you will have an easy life. Having the support service of the great tool is more critical.
